Advice for parents on completing the online application form 1 Why do I need to complete the application form? By law, we must give you an opportunity to express a preference for the school you would like your child to attend, and to give reasons for your preference. We must offer places according to preferences and in accordance with schools oversubscription criteria up to each school's published admission number. 2 What happens if I do not complete the application form? If you do not complete this form we will be unable to offer your child a school place at any school (this includes Aided and Foundation schools) for September 2006. If you subsequently make a late application for a place, you may find that local schools have become full for September 2006, and that we cannot offer a place at your preferred school. 3 I want a place at my local catchment area school - do I still need to complete the form expressing a preference for this school? Yes - it is essential that you return this form, even if you have completed a school form. 4 I have an older child already attending my preferred school - do I still need to complete the form? Yes - you must still complete and return the form. 5 If I want a place at an Aided or Foundation School - do I still need to complete the form? Yes - Preferences for places at Aided and Foundation schools must be made on the LA's Common Application Form. Preferences will be forwarded for consideration by the relevant school in line with their own admissions criteria. You must also contact the preferred school as additional information may be required to support your application. Preferences for places at Church Aided and Foundation schools in other local authorities will be forwarded to the appropriate local authority for consideration under the admissions criteria for the relevant school. Information is available from the authority concerned. 6 If there are more preferences than places available at my preferred school, how will places be allocated? Preferences for places at Cheshire's community schools are considered on the basis of the five criteria set out in the enclosed booklet, and the information which you provide on the attached form. If you wish to put forward medical and/or psychological circumstances in support of your preference, you must attach written evidence from a medical practitioner or psychologist. Preferences for places at community schools in other local authorities will be forwarded to the appropriate local authority for consideration under their admissions criteria. Information is available from the authority concerned. 7 Why am I asked to state second and third preferences? If it is not possible to offer a place at the school of your preference, we will need to allocate a place at another school. We therefore ask you to state three preferences. All preferences are treated as equal initially, and if more than one school place can potentially be offered, the single offer will be for the school the parent ranked the highest. If we are unable to offer one of your preferences, a place will be allocated at the next nearest school which has places available. 8 What can I do if my preferences are not met? If your first, second or third preference cannot be met, your child will be allocated a place at the next nearest school which has places available. If this happens you will still have a right of appeal to an independent appeals panel against the decision not to meet your first and/or second preference and/or third preference. Submitting an appeal will not affect the school place already allocated to your child.
